Great fun to be had with a kiln!
By Catherine HowardHaving saved for a few years, I finally managed to get enough money to buy a kiln, and I chose the Olympic Fuser 18.
It was the biggest I could fit into the space in my shed and I was able to start playing with it immediately because of the box of extras that came with it. Also, the kiln had already been pre-fired for me so I could skip that step.
Before the purchase I had a few enquiries, and I received prompt and detailed answers from the team at Creative Guild.
The kiln arrived in 2 boxes, the stand in one, and the body of the kiln in a second. Expanding foam was used to pack this securely in the box, so you do have to think about how you are going to dispose of it as the foam is bulky and stuck to the cardboard. (This is a road side delivery and the items may not be put into your garden / yard. However, the delivery men were lovely.) My husband and I managed to carry the kiln through the house together, negotiating steps and door frame and into the shed. It's heavy, but between the 2 of us it was ok.
Once set up there is an operating manual and a much easier to read firing schedule booklet from CGG. I also watched the video that Simon has done on programming the kiln on youtube.
I have had so much fun with my kiln. Glass projects have come out so beautifully. Glass projects have come out wrong and odd. But it's a marvellous kiln. 40cm working shelf. A good depth. Easy to program and you can also programme in the cost of electricity and see how much each firing is costing. It takes roughly 24 hours from start to cold and a great degree of patience is needed so you don't open the lid too quickly.
The shelf is fairly easy to lower in when loaded as long as you're careful where you hold it, or of course you can leave the shelf in the kiln and put your creations straight in
